Security Sensor Installation Instructions
This guide outlines the steps to properly install a LittleBird Security Sensor for doors, windows, and motion. The following steps should be precisely followed by a qualified technician to ensure system functionality and user safety. All local and national electric codes should be followed.
Supply list
Smart home Controller kit
5/8ths drill bit and a drill that can accommodate this size of the drill bit.
(Note: Drill bits should be sharp and without defects to allow for the cleanest installation of recessed sensors. )
Dolphin crimps
Blue painter’s tape
Drop cloths
Vacuum
Broom
Installing wireless recessed door sensor
Prepare a clean work area. Lay down drop cloths in the areas where you will be drilling, and have a vacuum and a broom on hand, as the drilling project produces a fair amount of sawdust.
Connect the in-line wireless receiver to the Smart Home Controller panel (see Smart Home Controller Installation Guide). The wireless sensors use a frequency that requires the use of the receiver to receive notifications from the sensor.
Record serial number of wireless recessed door sensor for each resident unit, for programming later.
Select a location for your sensor. This location can be almost anywhere along the opening side of the door frame.
Note: You will want to avoid placing the sensors along the top of the door frame as although the sensors will fit snugly into the drilled holes, they do not come with any method for securing them in place, and will vibrate loose over time. Sensors installed along the top will eventually fall out.
Mark the location on the door where you want your sensor.
As a guide, place a piece of tape along the area you want to install your sensor, cut the tape in half, and press the tape around the edges of the door and door frame. This will ensure the sensor is level on both sides of the door. See photo.
Drill your hole in the door frame.
Start with the door frame first, and place the sensor in the door frame. The magnet should ideally be placed into the door itself.
Note: It is better to have the sensor stationary and have the magnet be the only part moving. This prevents the sensor from receiving a shock from the door when it is closed hard, which may cause premature failure.
If you encounter any nails in the door frame when you try to install the sensor, switch the placement of the sensors so the magnet is in the door frame, and the sensor is in the door.
Note: Per the note in the above step, this is not optimal, but this is an acceptable workaround.
Select and mark a drill point, ensuring that the location will line up when the door is closed, Take into account the squish of the door seal. Make sure your drill bit is sharp. If the bit is dull, it will create a slightly beveled opening that does not look clean.
For both the sensor and magnet, mark the drill bit with a measuring line to know when to stop drilling.
Insert the sensor and magnet.
The magnet portion in the door can be placed directly in the center of the side of the door.
Insert the battery in the sensor before installing it into the door frame.
Once the battery is installed, align the arrow on the cap of the sensor with the side of the sensor with the metal sensor bar.
Press the sensor magnet and pieces into each of the drilled holes, and test close the door to ensure the devices are not obstructing the door.
If the door closes properly, the door sensor installation is complete! Clean the work areas to ensure there is no dust or debris remaining on the floors, window sills, etc.
Installing wireless window sensors
Assemble the sensor and sensor magnet. Below is a picture of the parts included in the sensor assembly:
Make note of the positioning of the magnetic closure sensor on the sensor, which normally looks like a glass tube. The closure sensor is located on the middle left side of the sensor in the picture below.
Record serial number of wireless window sensor for each resident unit, for programming later.
Adhere the included 3m tape to the backs of both the sensor and magnet.
Choose the desired sensor location on the door/window.
Close your door or window, and place your sensor on the door or window frame while placing the magnet on the door or window itself. Remove backing from the 3M tapes and adhere your sensor and magnet pieces in place.
Align the magnet and sensor so that the edges of each part are aligned when the door is fully closed.
The below pictures shows a completed installation.
Wireless motion sensor installation
Choose motion sensor placement.
Place the motion sensor at least 6-7ft off of the ground. Motion sensors should not aim toward windows. Ideally, motion sensors should aim toward an alternate entrance or a main walking corridor of the residence. Placement such as this will then detect anyone who may have bypassed the door sensor, to be detected on the motion sensor. For example, this corner represents an optimal placement of a motion detector. It faces away from the window and toward the opposite side of the room where a hallway leads to all other rooms in the residence. Anyone walking down the hallway will trip the motion sensor.
Disassemble the motion sensor.
Loosen the set screw at the bottom of the sensor in order to open the sensor.
There is a thin plastic piece of the sensor housing that will be used to mount the motion sensor to the wall.
Remove the plastic piece from the back of the motion sensor. You will mount this piece to the wall and use it to mount the motion sensor to the wall.
Record serial number of wireless motion sensor for each resident unit, for programming later.
Mount the plastic piece with the writing still legible. Be sure not to over-tighten the piece to the corner, as this will pull the tabs too far apart, and make it difficult to mount the motion sensor.
Mount the motion sensor and install the battery.
Once the battery is installed, replace the cover and tighten the set screw at the bottom of the sensor.
If you see an LED indicator through the front of the cover, such as in the picture above, the installation is complete!
Wired Sensors Resistor installation
When using wired sensors in a Smart Home residence, follow the manufacturer installation instructions. However, extra steps need to be taken for proper wiring to the Smart Home Controller panel.
Wiring Resistors
Each Smart Home Controller panel includes a pack of resistors. These are 1k resistors that need to be wired in series with any wired door/window or motion sensor.
Remove the positive wire on each “Z” terminal (Z1, Z2, Z3).
Crimp resistors using dolphin crimps (not supplied) to the positive side of the wiring. The positive side is the wire that will be connected to the zone screw terminal, and the negative wire will be connected to the ground screw terminal.
Place the resistor end back into the corresponding Z terminal.
Multiple sensors will look like the image above. Each zone gets its own resistor while sharing the common ground screw terminal.
Resistor wiring is complete!
Wired motion detector installation
Start by loosening the set screw at the bottom of the motion detector
Next you want to pop open one of the wire openings near the top of the sensor and pull your wire through.
Positive and negative wires will be the power going to the sensor while the terminals marked alarm are the data 0 and 1.
Once you have the wires connected you can replace the cover and tighten the set screw
At the Smart Home Controller panel strip back the wiring to the wire for your motion sensor.
Start by connecting the red and black wire to the DC positive and negative terminals, these terminals will be shared with the power supply for the Smart Home Controller panel.
Next crimp the included 1k resistor to the white wire. The resistor will be secured to the next available zone terminal. The picture shown above is connected to zone 1. Green will then be connected to the screw terminal labeled “G” ; this is the ground terminal.
Wired Window/Door sensor installation
The installation for both wired window and door sensors are similar. The main difference is the physical sensor itself.
Pictured above is a window sensor
Start by taking the wire protruding from the window or door frame. Strip back to reveal the wires, if the cable contains more than 2 wires, wrap the remaining around the cable and push back into the door frame.
Using dolphin wire crimps secure your sensor to the white and green wires. Polarity does not matter at this point.
Carefully insert the remaining wire back into the door frame, at this point you can remove the tape covering and secure the sensor to the frame of the window, door sensors will be pushed into the hole approximately ⅜” diameter.
After securing the sensor you can now remove the tape covering from the magnet and secure the magnet to the door or window.
At the panel using the same wire to your sensor, secure a resistor to the white wire and place it in the next available zone terminal, and place your green wire into the ground “G” terminal.
